The Shobrooke Village Field has been part of village life for many years but gradually the play equipment on site has rotted away and many items had been removed for safety areas.
Then they heard about Fields in Trust.
Shobrooke Village Field - Before
After nominating it for protection through the QEII Fields Challenge, Shobrooke Parish Council were able to apply for funding available only to QEII Fields. Thanks to SITA Trust, the field could apply for funding to rejuvenate their facilities.

The field is now completely transformed due to the over £20,000 of funding awarded to Shobrooke Village field from our partners SITA Trust.
New equipment includes a zip wire, basket swing, a timber fun trail and a slide. There’s also a wild area which has a withy den structure designed by the children. All the old equipment which remained has been refurbished and/or painted.
The newly renovated park has proved to be very popular with children (and parents!) and is very well used. It is good to hear the sound of happy children’s voices coming once again from the field. Children now bring their friends and relatives from other villages and the local town to use the space and its equipment.
“The designation (of a Fields in Trust Protected field) has opened up opportunities for funding which would have been very difficult to access without it. New money has been awarded and the renovating of the field has transformed it into an area with high quality items which are very well used. A once moribund area is now buzzing again.”
Fred Harper, a Parish Councillor
As Lesley Browne from the Friends of Shobrooke Playing Fields says: “The play area really is a focal point in the village and the fact that it will remain as green space to be enjoyed by future generations is a wonderful result of the designation of the field as a Field in Trust.”
In March 2013, they reopened the Fields, celebrating their improvements and the permanent protection of their much loved green space. The Lord Lieutenant of Devon unveiled their QEII Fields Plaque.
Some quotes from local residents
“The opening on 28th March 2013 represents two years of work from the voluntary group of parents who have consulted, planned, applied for funds and worked in the Field to improve the facilities for everyone."
"I live near the playing field and love the fact that when the children come home from school they are out there playing in the field and not inside staring at a screen."
“I think it’s wonderful that the field is now owned by the village in perpetuity and will be enjoyed by generations to come”
“The developments in the playing field have totally transformed our children’s experience of life here in Shobrooke - they always want to be outside playing in the park now. It’s wonderful and we feel very lucky that our family can enjoy this alongside other families for years to come.”
